Is there any contradiction between the Qur’an and the experimental science?

Islam does not contradict the experimental science; rather, many of the western scientists, who did not believe in Allah, have reached the reality through their scientific discoveries that there must exist a creator. Islam gives preponderance to the mind and intellect and invites people to contemplate and reflect on the universe.

As a matter of fact, Islam calls all mankind to reflect on the signs of Allah and His magnificent creation. It calls people to travel through the land and explore the universe using the mind, intellect, and logic. It also encourages people to look and examine the horizons and their own selves more than once, for they will inevitably find the answers they are looking for and will definitely find themselves believing in the existence of the Creator. People will reach the perfect conviction and certainty that this universe has emerged with deliberation and for a purpose, and at the end, they will reach the conclusion that there is no god but Allah, which Islam calls for.

Allah Almighty said:

{He Who created seven heavens one above another; you will not see any imperfection in the creation of the Most Compassionate. Look again; can you see any flaw? Then look again and again; your sight will turn back to you humbled and weary.} [127] Surat al-Mulk: 3-4.

{We will show them Our signs in the universe and in their own selves, until it becomes clear to them that this [Qur’an] is the truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is a Witness over all things?} [128] Surat Fussilat: 53.

{Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth; the alternation of the night and day; the sailing of the ships in the sea for the benefit of people; the sending down of rain from the sky by Allah, reviving thereby the earth after its death; the spreading of all kinds of creatures therein; the directing of the winds and clouds between the sky and earth – in all these, there are signs for people of understanding.} [129] Surat al-Baqarah: 164.

{And He has subjected for you the night and day, the sun and moon, and the stars are made subservient by His command. Indeed, there are signs in this for people of understanding.} [130] Surat an-Nahl: 12.

{We built the heaven with might, and We are indeed expanding it.} [131] Surat adh-Dhāriyāt: 47.

{Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs in the earth, then He brings forth thereby crops of various colors; then they whither and you see them turn yellow; then He causes them to crumble? Indeed, there is a reminder in this for people of understanding.} [132] Surat az-Zumar: 21. The water cycle, as discovered by modern science today, has been described 500 years ago. In the past, people used to believe that water came from the ocean and penetrated deeply in the land and, subsequently, the springs and groundwater were formed. It was also believed that the condensation of the humidity in the soil formed the water. However, the Qur’an has clearly and assertively stated how the water was formed 1400 years ago.

{Are the disbelievers not aware that the heavens and earth were joined together and then We split them apart? We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?} [133] Surat al-Anbiyā’: 30. Modern science has just discovered that life was formed in water, and that the main constituent of the primary cell is water. Such information was not known to non-Muslims, in addition to the balance in the kingdom of plants. All this was mentioned in the Qur’an to prove that Prophet Muhammad was not speaking out of his own mind.

{We created man from an extract of clay, then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a safe place, then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, then We made the clinging clot into a lump, then We made the lump into bones, and We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We developed it into another creation. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators.} [134] Surat al-Mu’minūn: 12-14. Keith Moore, the Canadian scientist, is one of the most prominent scientists of anatomy and embryology around the world. His scientific journey across many universities has been remarkable. He chaired many of the international scientific associations like the Anatomists and Embryologist Association in Canada and America and the Biomedical Sciences Council. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in Canada, the International Academy of Cytology, the American Association of Anatomists, and the Americas Association of Anatomy. In 1980, Keith Moore declared his Islam after reading the Noble Qur’an and the verses that talk about the formation of the embryo which were far ahead of all the modern sciences. He narrated the story of his embracing Islam saying: "I was invited to attend the international conference of the scientific signs that was held in Moscow in the late seventies. While some of the Muslim scientists were demonstrating the universe-related verses, specifically the verse where Allah Almighty said: {He manages every matter from the heaven to the earth, then everything ascends to Him on a Day the length of which is a thousand years by your reckoning.} [Surat as-Sajdah: 5] The Muslim scientists continued citing other verses that talked about the formation of the embryo and man, and since I was extremely interested in knowing other verses of the Qur’an and in a broader sense, I continued to listen attentively. Those verses represented a strong response to everyone and it left a special impression on me, as I started to feel that this is what I want and what I have been searching for for many years through laboratories, researches, and the use of modern technology, yet what the Qur’an has brought, before the age of technology and science, is comprehensive and complete."

{O people, if you are in doubt concerning the Resurrection, then We surely created you from dust, then from a drop of sperm, then from a clot, then from a lump of flesh – formed or unformed – so that We may make it clear to you [Our power]. We settle in the wombs whatever We will for an appointed term. Then We bring you out as infants, then [We nurture you] so that you may reach your maturity. Then some of you die, while others are left to reach the decrepit old age so that they may know nothing after having knowledge. You see the land lifeless, then as soon as We send down rain on it, it stirs and swells to life and brings forth every type of pleasant plant.} [135] Surat al-Hajj: 5. This is the precise cycle of the embryonic development as discovered by modern science.
